4:13 this morning I awoke with a start. Well, more like a BOOM. One really big boom of thunder. So I lay in bed listening to other more distant rumbles and the occasional louder boom, and the sound of a fairly heavy shower outside my window.
I think to myself, should I get up and unplug some things, just in case. I decide against bothering, and just lay there listening. I love the sound of storms.
It makes me think of when I was a young boy. If there was a thunder and lightening storm my Mom would get the whole house up. We would run around the house unplugging every plug we could find, and then gather in the living room in the dark waiting for the storm to pass. I was never frightened by it, I just found it exciting and kind of cool. It wasn’t until much later that it dawned on me that we did this because my Mom was scared to death of the thunder and lightning.
I remember once when my Mom journeyed to Massachusetts to visit her sister. There had been a fairly intense thunder storm go through the neighbourhood one afternoon, and no one really took much notice of it. The kids kept watching TV, the cooking of the evening meal continued. My Mom couldn’t believe it. Nothing unplugged?? How could they live like that?
It’s pretty seldom these days that a storm will lead me to start unplugging things.
What about you? Are you afraid of lightening? Do you unplug everything?
