A Planning Advisory Committee meeting in the Municipality of Yarmouth next month will look at an application for a new aquaculture site in Chebogue Point.
Boreal Salmon wants to develop an open-flow land-based salmon farm on the property.
The planner recommends that the committee ask council to approve changes to the land-use by-law to allow both open and closed land-based aquaculture, and enter into a development agreement. It’s currently zoned so just closed containment aquaculture activities are permitted.
CAO Victoria Brooks says she’s expecting to hear feedback from the public, as aquaculture is a relatively new industry.
She says there are several land-based aquaculture sites in Southwestern Nova Scotia.
“The municipal involvement at this point is around land use. Anything to do with a permit to operate would land with the provincial and federal governments,” said Brooks.
The meeting will take place on July 20th at 6 p.m. virtually.
The committee will also consider an application from Chegoggin Dyke Coup Limited to establish a Lobster Holding Facility at Chegoggin Point.
Brooks says the committee will take that public feedback and make a recommendation to council.
“Once that recommendation goes to council, if council makes a motion for first reading to amend the land-use by-law to re-zone the applications, then there’s another opportunity for public engagement. There would be another hearing between first and second readings.”
Brooks says the municipality has reached out to adjacent property owners, and the planner is taking questions from the public
