A demolition order for a run-down building on Main Street in Yarmouth was given by town council yesterday.
The owner of 303/305 Main Street now has 30 days to complete demolition, or the town will begin the process.
The adjoining building at 307/309 Main is set to be demolished as well, with multiple issues identified by inspectors, who called it a ‘construction safety disaster,’ and noted a brick wall at the rear was in danger of collapsing in high winds.
Yarmouth Mayor Pam Mood says it’s difficult to let the building go, but it’s about safety.
“First of all, council would never want to take down any building if there’s hope. This one is too far gone. It’s a safety issue for our citizens, and it needs to come down,” said Mood.
Mood says they gave the building owner until yesterday’s meeting to come up with a plan to save the structure, but that wasn’t produced.
She says the possibilities are endless for the space in the future.
“It’s a difficult one for us, and it’s an historic building. It’s a huge gap on Main Street. We’ll be getting together and taking a look at what could possibly go in there.”
