The process to change four place names in Shelburne County is underway.
A letter went out to residents earlier this month from Service Nova Scotia, inviting residents to be a part of consultations to change the name of Cape Negro and the harbour, island and point that bear the name.
Director of Geographical Information Services Colin MacDonald says it’s important the names become inclusive and appropriate.
“That’s why we’ve initiated this engagement, to receive feedback from the residents of Shelburne County. We are also interested in feedback from all Nova Scotians,” said MacDonald.
MacDonald says these names are not acceptable, and they’ve been working closely with the Municipality of Barrington, who requested the province expedite the process.
He says they would support new names that reflect African Nova Scotian heritage and culture.
“The names on maps reflect heritage and culture. It’s important the names are inclusive to residents of Shelburne County, and more broadly speaking, across Nova Scotia.”
About 5,600 surveys went out to Shelburne County residents.
To give your feedback, visit nsplacenames.ca. The deadline for submission is July 9th.
MacDonald says the most suitable names will be shared with residents of Shelburne County for final selection.
Then the changes will be put before municipal councils and provincial MLA’s for final approval.
