The co-creator of a Facebook group that helps cancer patients in Southwestern Nova Scotia is applauding last week’s funding announcement by the province.
Derek Lesser of the Western Nova Scotia Cancer Support Network says the news of a million dollars in annual funding to enhance cancer services at Yarmouth Regional Hospital is a major step in the right direction.
Lesser and Sandy Dennis, who passed away from cancer in 2019, created the group to raise awareness, and over 20,000 people joined.
He says the announcement is something Dennis would have appreciated.
“This was her wish, to have better service for cancer patients. Right until the end, she remained with a smile on her face working as hard as she could. She would be very happy with this announcement I believe,’ said Lesser.
Lesser wanted to create the group after his daughter was diagnosed with cancer.
He says the group was a blessing, and raised awareness to create change.
“It was something that went very viral, and I didn’t realize at that point how many people needed those services in Yarmouth.”
