A 33 year old moratorium on offshore oil and gas exploration in Georges Bank is due for renewal next year.
Indications from the province are that the moratorium will be upheld after a review takes place.
But John Davis, Director of the Clean Ocean Action Committee wants to see a full public inquiry on the risks of offshore drilling in and around Georges Bank.
He says 13 towns and municipalities in Nova Scotia are working with the committee to call for the inquiry.
Davis says many currents flow through the bank, and it’s a natural breeding ground with important nutrients for fish.
“We have a two billion dollar industry here that can grow and flourish, if we work to help it do that. We have at least 25,000 jobs that are directly dependent on that industry, and we can make that number grow.”
Davis says it’s critically important that Nova Scotians have an understanding of how disastrous an oil spill in or around Georges Bank would be.
“We feel that if all of the information could come out, that the people of Nova Scotia, who are a sensible bunch, would say, ‘ok, let’s not kill the goose that lays the golden egg.’
