A notice of demolition has been issued for the building at 307/309 Main Street in downtown Yarmouth.
The adjoining building to 303/305 Main Street, which also has a pending demolition notice, was issued today by Yarmouth town council.
The latest after new concerns came to light about the rear of the building, including an unstable brick wall that could collapse in high winds.
Mayor Pam Mood says they’ve also issued a do not enter order, and the perimeter of the unsafe portion has been secured.
“We’ve taken many steps in the hopes that actions would be taken to save the building. There are two of them connected. Frankly right now, public safety trumps everything. Council isn’t about to take that chance.”
Mood says pedestrians will still be able to use the sidewalk in front of the building.
Both buildings are owned by Stephen Howatt, he will be able to appeal on June 14th.
Meanwhile, a decision on demolition for 303/305 Main will likely be made at the June Committee of the Whole meeting.
