More time has been given to a building owner in downtown Yarmouth.
Council issued a demolition order for 305 Main Street, calling it ‘dangerous and unsightly’ after an inspection.
On May 13th, council deferred a decision on demolition for two weeks.
Mayor Pam Mood gives an update after the most recent meeting last week.
“Again, we deferred a decision on the demolition order for 303-305 Main Street until the June Committee of the Whole meeting,” said Mood.
Mood says they require a report and plan for the building from the property owner.
“We’re looking for that by the 22nd of June, that will give council a few days to review it before the next meeting.”
Inspectors noted the building’s south side has major roof and water damage, and questioned the structural integrity of the building.
The building was called a ‘construction safety disaster.’
Earlier the town sent in experts to secure the building, saying that public safety was their first priority.
Owner, Stephen Howatt, told council on May 13th that he had difficulty making necessary repairs due to the lack of a construction mortgage, which he now has.
Council then deferred a decision for two weeks.
