A building in downtown Yarmouth was deemed dangerous and unsightly after a recent inspection.
Town council recently issued a notice of demolition for 305 Main Street.
Town staff say the building’s south side has major roof and water damage, and there are concerns about the structural integrity.
Staff called the building a ‘construction safety disaster.’
During a virtual meeting last night, and after a lengthy discussion, council deferred a decision on demolition for two weeks.
Mayor Pam Mood says council had a chance to ask questions to the building’s owner, Stephen Howatt.
“And we want to give everyone the benefit of the doubt. We’ll see what happens in the next two weeks and go from there. Safety is first and foremost in our minds. We need to make sure things are done properly.”
Howatt told council he’s been planning to make repairs, but getting a construction mortgage has been difficult in the pandemic, but he’s now approved for one.
Council said they’d like to see an engineer’s report and a timeline in place for repairs as soon as possible.
