A local student has received national recognition for his technology project.
Charlie McLaughlin is in Grade 10 at Yarmouth Consolidated Memorial High School, and is one of 61 students across Canada to receive the Ted Rogers Innovation Award.
McLaughlin impressed at his local Science, Technology, Engineering and Math fair with his application, ‘Rate My Drive.’
He says the idea was born out of a conversation with his father.
“Users can submit reviews for the route, instead of the destinations. These reviews can include traffic, road and weather conditions. This is really useful for tourists and people driving to unknown locations, where they may not know the road,” said McLaughlin.
McLaughlin’s project will be featured at the virtual ‘Canada-Wide Science Fair’ next week.
He says it feels nice for the app to be recognized as having solid commercial potential.
“I decided to start developing it because I’m interested in coding. This is the type of thing I love to do. So I decided to take this idea, and see if I could make it go far.”
