A project focusing on Yarmouth’s immigration history has received provincial funding.
Harbourfront Museum on Water Street is heading the project, titled ‘Economic and Community Impact of Immigration to Yarmouth and Area from the late 1800s to Present.’
They received $10,000 from Communities, Culture and Heritage.
Museum Vice President Patti Durkee says they are looking to develop exhibits on multiple floors as part of a larger project.
Durkee says it will cost a significant amount of money, and they’ll be seeking more funding and donations.
“So that we can build this exhibit the way it should be built,” says Durkee. “We’re thinking that it would be a great hub for the waterfront in Yarmouth as well as the Sweeney Museum. Hoping to work on a collaboration with them.”
Durkee says the money will help with the development of the display.
“We want to share the stories that came with them,” Durkee says. “Why they came, how they came, how they settled, and the relationship between those two cultures.”
Also, a travelling exhibit called ‘Refuge Canada’ is expected to arrive at the Killam building this summer.
