A review of the location of waste receptacles is being done by the Town of Yarmouth.
This after a call for the installation of more units throughout the town from the public.
There are 59 receptacles in the downtown core, parks and public spaces.
Mayor Pam Mood says she expects citizens to do the right thing when it comes to disposing waste.
“It’s not our job to have a garbage can on every street corner. It’s up to the citizens to make sure they properly dispose of waste.”
Operations staff says it costs $47,000 annually to maintain the receptacles, and vandalism is common.
Mood says some are throwing garbage at the receptacles instead of putting it in, and it tasks staff with a lot of hours in cleanup time.
“It’s taking two people an awful lot of hours, and it’s costing thousands of dollars. And that’s not even cleaning up around the receptacles, where people can’t seem to hit the hole.”
Operations staff will conduct the review based on potential underserviced areas.
