The fight continues for the mother of a Chief William Saulis crew member who is being denied his accidental death benefits.
Aaron Cogswell was one of the six men who lost their life when the ship sank.
His mother, Lori Cogswell Phillips, has received a letter from the Workers Compensation Board, stating that her family will not receive the accidental death benefit for her son because he did not have a spouse or children.
She’s said before that it isn’t about the money, it’s about her son not being worth what the other crew members were.
“My son was autistic and he always had to be working because he always didn’t feel like he was worthy,” said Phillips. “WCB just validated everything that he felt all his life and it just breaks my heart. That’s the reason I’m fighting today.”
Phillips says she will continue to fight for her son to receive the same treatment as the other crew members.
“I’m fighting it. Fight, fight, fight it. I’m going to try to reach every employer across the country so they can say ‘I’ve got employees that are not covered that I think are covered, lets look into these premiums, what I’m paying for and what I’m actually going to get if something happens.'”
