Two mural projects have been approved by the Yarmouth Facade Society for the upcoming year.
The first at 313-315 Main Street on the Iceworks building will display a sailing ship to signify the history of Yarmouth’s global trading on the sea.
The second will be a project between Maple Grove and the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, featuring a mural of an Octopus’ Garden on a high visibility wall in the town.
Chair of the Facade Society Belle Hatfield says businesses had been hesitant to commit to funding art projects because of the uncertainty of the pandemic.
She says the society upped the mural funding to a maximum of $7,500 for a $10,000 project
“We hope going forward that it’s going to give property owners more security in taking that risk of getting into a project that isn’t their core mandate.”
Hatfield says they received $50,000 from the town in March for 2020-21, and the facade society now has $60,000 available to support future projects.
The society also plans to expand its signage program for businesses.
Hatfield says this will help store owners improve their visibility on the street.
“And it’s up to the property owners and store owners to develop their signage with help from our Economic Development Officer. Our role is to provide economic incentive for that program.”
Up to $500 is available for businesses.
