A group of parents are making sure graduates get their prom this year.
Last year, COVID-19 wiped out prom plans for most schools, including Yarmouth Consolidated Memorial High School.
Sharla Pinksen, along with three other parents started the initiative, as schools are not allowed to plan proms this year.
Pinksen has a daughter in Grade 12, and says she wants her daughter and peers to be able to celebrate their accomplishments.
“Because they’ve worked so hard all these years, it’s nice for them to have something in the end, and be able to celebrate graduating.”
She says the response from the community has been great.
“People are coming to us with donations. Every bit helps, and it’s strength in numbers. The more people that help, it will be a success for sure.”
Pinksen says the plan is to have the prom at Mariners Centre on June 11th, hosted by Mile East Productions.
She says when tickets become available, they’ll be first come first serve, with priority given to graduates. If room permits they will open up to graduates dates.
Rick Allwright with Mile East Productions says they’re putting a proposal into the province to have the event in zones, much like at Mariners hockey games, with smaller groups making up each zone.
