Yarmouth town council repealed its curfew by-law last night.
It stated that no person under the age of 14 shall walk, or be on a street sidewalk, restaurant or place of amusement in the town between the hours of 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. without a parent or guardian.
Mayor Pam Mood says council acted on the recommendation of the Staff Sergeant.
“We’re doing a review of all our by-laws and policies. We speak with the RCMP often, and the chief there recommended repealing it, so that’s what we’ve done. There was no concern from the public.”
Mood called the by-law, which was created in 1998, ‘unconstitutional.’
She says at the time, there could have been an issue that caused it to be written, and it’s important to protect youth.
But she says it’s 2021, and it’s important to keep the rights of citizens in mind.
