The Tri-County Women’s Centre was discussed in the legislature yesterday.
PC Argyle-Barrington MLA Colton LeBlanc says the centre has had to allocate its time and efforts into chasing after funding from government.
He asked Health and Wellness Minister Zach Churchill about wait times for sexual assault counselling services at the centre in Yarmouth.
“For the trauma specific therapy provided there, there were 24 active clients and eight individuals on the waitlist. As of December, the next client to begin counselling will have to wait another eight months.”
LeBlanc asked Churchill if it was appropriate to have eight clients on a waiting list for that long.
Churchill responded, saying the centre does incredible work for the community.
“Government is expanding funding for sexual assault and sexual violence trauma support, and the centre will benefit from the new programming.”
LeBlanc then asked the minister if he’d work with other departments to provide stable long term funding.
Churchill said former Health Minister Randy Delorey helped secure that funding, and repeated the centre will benefit from this.
