Affordable housing remains a talking point in Yarmouth.
Work will soon begin at the former Yarmouth High School on Parade Street, to turn the building into a 54 unit mixed housing complex.
The plan is for 27 affordable housing units in the facility.
Town council matched $650,000 given by the province’s Department of Municipal Affairs for the project.
The building has sat vacant since 2012.
Yarmouth Mayor Pam Mood says she’s looking forward to seeing the work started.
“It’s going to take a little bit of pressure off the housing issue in town. That issue is everywhere, through the entire country. The high school project, there are a few more I’s to dot and T’s to cross, but we should be on our way soon.”
Mood says it will be a year or two before the project is finished, as it’s a huge undertaking.
In the meantime, she says the Mayor’s Task Force continues to meet to discuss ways to increase affordable housing.
Developers have started a website, yarmouthschoolproject.com, where there is already a waiting list for sign-up
