Today is International Transgender Day of Visibility.
The transgender flag was raised in a ceremony at Yarmouth town hall this morning.
Members of the Yarmouth Consolidated Memorial High School GSA (gay-straight alliance) walked from the school to attend.
Grade 12 student Hannah Saulnier made a speech and helped raise the flag.
She says it’s great that the town was open to doing this.
“It’s really important to be able to recognize the trans people in our community and in our lives, and show them the support that they need. I’m really happy Yarmouth was able to do that.”
Members of town council and Yarmouth municipal council were also on hand.
Town councilor Derek Lesser says this is an important day.
“Especially for youth that are battling discrimination because of being gay, lesbian or transgender. Having the flag flying in our town symbolizes that we’re progressive, and we accept everybody.”
A ceremony was also held at the Argyle municipal building in Tusket.
The events were organized by the Yarmouth Pride Collective.
