Good Morning!
Today is the 84th Day of 2021.
When it come to buying produce from our local grocery store , the produce is usually in good to perfect condition.
The so called Ugly Fruits and vegetables never make it to the Produce dept. of your local Grocery Store.
Anyone who has grown their own produce knows that mother nature can give you some odd looking results.
Where you will find Ugly Produce is local farm markets where local producers and farmers take their fruits and veggies to local market.
This information from Canoe.com : New research says that labelling wonky fruits and vegetables “ugly” makes us more likely to purchase them. The University of British Columbia study determined that candid labelling indicates to consumers that the only thing that sets the imperfect produce apart is aesthetics, rather than poorer nutrition or an “off” taste. Consumers usually tend to reject unattractive produce, leading to immense food waste. In the U.S., farmers throw out up to 30% of their crops annually because they failed to meet beauty standards.
Seriously !! What a waste of produce .. Up to 30% is tossed out in the United States because it’s ugly looking !
When I go shopping I will buy a blemished apple , a crooked Carrot , an oddly shaped Pear or Tomato . The taste is the same and it’s still full of the nutrients .
A scientist on the myth of ugly produce and food waste
Would you and Do You buy imperfect fruits and vegetables ?
