Plans to re-open the former YMCA building in downtown Yarmouth took a step forward yesterday.
The Mariners Centre Expansion Steering Committee passed two recommendations from the bridge sub-committee.
The recommendations task the Mariners Centre with operating the facility at 275 Main Street, as well as developing a business plan and budget.
Chair of the steering committee John Cunningham says they also talked about fundraising for future expansion of the Mariners Centre.
“There’s a possibility of hiring consultants, so that they can get their boots on the ground in regards to philanthropy, and also corporate sponsorship for the new expansion.”
The recommendations for the former Y building will need to be approved by the three municipal units.
Yarmouth town council will hold a meeting today at 3:30.
Each council has committed $75,000 toward the project.
The town purchased the building last year after the YCMA closed due to financial struggles.
Cunningham says it’s hoped the bridge facility could open by September at the earliest.
