The Premier had some harsh words for the province’s opposition parties.
Speaking to reporters after Thursday’s cabinet meeting, Stephen McNeil said the opposition parties are to blame for the prorogation of the legislature.
McNeil said he received a letter from the NDP caucus comparing MLA’s to essential workers.
“I have to ignore the public health protocols because the two opposition people think they’re equivalent to healthcare workers, they’re equivalent to teachers, they’re equivalent to people who have been working their tails off to keep us safe,” he said. “All the sacrifice you’ve made over the last ten months, all we ask from our elected officials is to join you, to be a little courageous, to do things a bit differently, but instead they put their own self interest ahead of yours.”
McNeil said the house could have met virtually, but the Tories and NDP would not entertain it.
He said he encourages everyone to watch the proceedings.
“Watch the exercise itself, and the arrogance of the people elected in this province who are going to force the Premier of this province, the very person who’s been working with you, to break the public health protocols of Dr. Strang, who I’ve sat next to, now, here for months.”
McNeil said the legislature will meet Friday, but only for long enough for the Lieutenant-Governor to prorogue the house.
