The Chief of the Acadia First Nation has issued a strong rebuke of a letter issued by the Yarmouth and Area Chamber of Commerce last month.
In the letter dated September 25th but issued publicly on Wednesday, October 8th, Chief Deborah Robinson says the Chamber letter pretends to be supportive of First Nations and Treaty Rights, but that she could detect no support or respect in the letter.
Chief Robinson chastised the Chamber for remaining silent on the push to implement a Mi’kmaq Moderate Livelihood fishery over the past two decades, and suggested that the letter sent by the executive was based on personal views and not fact.
The letter goes on to note that the Acadia First Nation was not consulted before the letter was issued and that they are requesting to be removed from the Chamber and have their dues returned.
The letter also requests a written apology, and that it be copied to all recipients of the Chamber letter.
