A record-breaking dry June has led to some low wells in parts of Yarmouth County, but the Mayor of Yarmouth says the town is ready to help.
The town’s Brenton filling station was closed for Covid-19 in the spring and will remain closed following a staff assessment that flagged traffic and other hazards at that location.
The town’s water utility has given the ok for a bulk water filling station at the Mariners Centre.
Pam Mood explains that in order for it to be used, an official request from neighbouring Municipal units needs to be made before the taps are opened.
“We are bound by the rules of the Utility and Review Board, the Department of Environment, it’s legislation, it’s rules, it’s the law,” she explained. “So we simply can’t open up the taps and let it flow.”
Mood notes that the town has reached out to both local municipal units to confirm that an arrangement has been made should the need for water arise.
“We’ve asked for a backflow valve to be put in for health and safety reasons, and we have also asked the Mariners Centre to install a meter so that the other Municipalities don’t have to pay a sewer charge along with the water charge so to save them so money there.”
The metered method eliminates the need for tokens, as users had at the Brenton filling station.
