The federal government has given notice that they will remove a derelict vessel from Yarmouth Harbour.
Mayor Pam Mood says the vessel, on the shore of Bakers Island, is considered a landmark by some and an eyesore by others.
“Let’s call it for what it is, it’s one of our little icons,” she chuckled. “You stand on the wharf in the Town of Yarmouth and you can see that abandoned ship that has been there for many, many, many years.”
Mood says the order is under section 39 of the Wrecked, Abandoned or Hazardous Vessels Act.
“It’s the official notice of the Minister of Transport intention to dispose of the vessel after thirty days from this notice,” she explained. “So they will send someone in to take care of that.”
The notice arrived earlier this week and will be acted upon in early July.
