Two RCMP officers unloaded a handful of shots at a Lower Onslow fire hall Sunday morning, but Nova Scotia’s police watchdog says they aren’t sure at what.
The Serious Incident Response Team is investigating two reports sent in by RCMP in relation to a mass shooting in the Province last weekend that left 22 victims dead.
The shooting at the Lower Onslow Fire Brigade took place around 10:30 AM Sunday, which saw two officers pull up to the building and open fire, before leaving moments after.
Pat Curran, interim director for SIRT says right now, they are unsure of what they were firing at.
“To say they were firing at something is exactly right, we don’t know at what,” he said.
The suspect at this time was not in the area.
The incident left a number of bullet holes in the wall of the building, and caused substantial damage to both the building and a fire engine stored inside, which is now unable to be used according to a news release from the Onslow Fire Department.
The building was also being used as registration zone for residents who had been evacuated from Portapique earlier and had members of the public and other RCMP officers on scene.
Curran says two RCMP members were identified in the report, and the investigation is ongoing. He was not able to comment on whether or not the RCMP would be on the hook for the damages caused if the report finds the members had used their firearms without cause.
SIRT is also investigating the take down and subsequent death of the gunman later that morning in Enfield.
