Yarmouth Town Council discussed what to do about a problem with some compost loads from Yarmouth.
Mayor Pam Mood says that, although this part of the province is one of the best at recycling and composting, there are still people trying to compost garbage.
“We’re just finding a lot of plastics within the compost bins,” she explained. “So the policy just says if the facility manager thinks there is excessive contamination to either reject it and re-load it for half the tipping fee, or to double the tipping fee and we can recoup our costs because it costs money to take it out.”
The Waste Check compost facility does not accept plastic compostable bags due to the length of time it takes for them to break down.
They also don’t accept ashes, which have been known to cause fires in the green bins.
