I was looking at an old game camera card the other night and found this photo from a few years back. It’s a Mainland Moose! After doing some research I found out that there are two different types of species of moose in Nova Scotia. The Cape Breton Moose found of course in Cape Breton and the Mainland Moose found around mainland Nova Scotia. There are only around 1000 Mainland Moose in our province and they are not exactly rare but they are not seen that often! Since there are so few they have been listed as an endangered species.

So why are there so few Mainland Moose? The biggest reason is because of a brain worm that makes them very sick. It is carried by white tailed deer (we have enough of them) the worm does not make deer sick however. Experts also think that climate change and habitat change might have something to do with the drop in population. So Mainland Moose are pretty rare to see but not unheard of. Have you ever seen one? Where, and did it seem sick?
I find it very interesting that such a massive animal is so rare to see in such a small province!
