Today is the Acadian National Holiday! It’s a day to celebrate the heritage of our area, and of the influence of the Acadian People all over Canada.
National Acadian Day is celebrated on August 15th because it’s also the Feast of the Assumption of Mary into heaven, and Our Lady of Assumption is the Patron Saint of the Acadians.
It’s also a great excuse to head over to Le Village Historique Acadien de la Nouvelle-Ecosse in Pubnico! The Historic Acadian Village of Nova Scotia and the Musée des Acadiens des Pubnicos have joined together to celebrate from 11 am until 3. It will be a day filled with activities for all ages – Games, music, cake, BBQ and more!
In Clare, the annual Acadian flag raising ceremony is at 9:30 a.m., at the Clare Veterans Centre, 9938 Highway 1, Saulnierville. It will be followed by a mass at 11:00 a.m. and lunch at Église Saint-Bernard, 3623 Highway 1, St. Bernard, and then there’s a flea market and a chicken BBQ.
On this National Acadian Day is the TV debut of the latest Heritage Minute depicting the Expulsion of the Acadians in 1755 – a dark time in our history. Check out that video here:
Happy National Acadian Day from your friends at Y95!
