Construction of the new Yarmouth Elementary School is on schedule.
In fact, Steve Stoddart, director of operations for the Tri-County Regional Centre for Education, says the steel that’s going up now is ahead of schedule.
He says the two-storey, 14-classroom school is unique with lots of open learning areas.
“There’s open learning areas in different parts of the school. There’s the Da Vinci Studio and on the second floor is an area called an Academic Stair, which is another learning space.”
The gymnasium from the former junior high is being incorporated into the new school.
“That was great. It wasn’t only a money saver, but a new elementary school would never get a gym of that size.”
Stoddart says there will be a parking lot on the Parade and Brunswick Street corner of the property with a drop-off loop on Brunswick Street.
He says the public will have an opportunity to see what the school will look like.
“Once everything is 100 per cent final, we intend to have a public meeting so people can come and see the plans and ask questions of the architect of the department. I think that’s going to be happening probably in September.”
The school will replace Yarmouth Central School and the former South Centennial School.
Construction is scheduled to be complete by June of 2019.
