(Phil LeBlanc holds the Award of Excellence that IMO Food Ltd. received last week)
An individual and a company from Yarmouth, both synonymous with the seafood industry, were honoured last week in Halifax.
Dick Stewart and IMO Foods Ltd. were presented with Awards of Excellence by Keith Colwell at a fisheries ministers conference.
Stewart was honoured for 39 years as manager of the Atlantic Herring Co-op and his work with many other groups.
It was noted that he shared his “unequalled knowledge of the fishing industry to affect positive change and growth in the fishery.”
Stewart says it was heartwarming to receive the recognition.
“Being in the Herring Co-Op and the Full Bay (Scallop Association). I’ve had a full life in the fishing industry and it’s good to see the minister notice it.”
IMO Foods was honoured for its “on-going commitment to producing high value, superior quality, value added products.”
IMO Foods is the last independently owned fish cannery in Canada and has been in operation for 40 years.
President Phil LeBlanc says it’s always nice to be recognized.
“We tend to work here in Yarmouth under the radar. We don’t try to get a lot of attention. When we do it is appreciated and shows the province does realize what’s going on in some of the rural areas of the province.”
