The Yarmouth Fire Department wants to get to 60 members.
They are putting out a call for more volunteer firefighters to register for training.
The department is also looking for more women to join the team.
Melissa Hinckley has been a volunteer firefighter for nearly two years.
She says it’s been an excellent experience.
“It’s been great. We’re not treated any differently. There are four of us out of 33 members, and we would love to have more. We can do just as much as the men can. I was nervous starting out. Years prior I had been thinking about joining, so I decided to put in an application and they got back to me. There were two other girls that joined at the same time as me, so we kind of bonded together.”
Hinckley says a lot of training goes into it at first, including classroom and hands-on.
After a year, you can participate in fire-calls.
She says diversity is so important, and everybody has a place at the fire department.
To put in an application, visit the Town of Yarmouth website and look under ‘fire services’ or drop into the department on Pleasant Street.
