The Yarmouth Junior A Mariners remain in first place in the Eastlink South Division.
Yarmouth got two goals from Aaron Maillet en route to a 6-1 thumping of the Pictou County Weeks Crushers tonight at Mariners Centre.
Logan Timmons, Brent Broaders, Kyle Bergh and Adam Pilotte also scored, and Leif Hertz made 36 saves for his 23rd win of the season.
There could be suspensions handed out from the league after a wild third period.
Six fighting majors were split between the clubs and a total of eight players were ejected.
Mariners Head Coach Laurie Barron was also tossed from the game after a heated exchange with the officials.
Barron says there was no need for things to escalate on the ice the way they did.
“I know the officials have to do their job, and it’s a hard job. Anyway, I got my quarters worth (of remarks in), and it might cost me a game, but it was worth it, I guess.”
As far as the game itself, the Mariners were solid offensively, with a few defensive breakdowns in their own end.
Barron says their goaltender was huge.
“Leif Hertz bailed us out when we made mistakes, but we were very good from the centre line in. Leif certainly helped us out when things went the wrong way.”
With the win, Yarmouth stayed one point in front of South Shore for first place, as the Lumberjacks bested the Woodstock Slammers 4-1.
The Mariners host the Slammers tomorrow night at 7:30.
