Yarmouth’s fire chief is reminding people to be careful when burning around their properties.
Grassfire season has begun and yesterday firefighters were kept busy responding to a number of calls.
Chief John Verrall says it’s costly to put out grass fires and ties up firefighters and equipment.
“If we’re out fighting a grass fire because someone just wanted to light one for fun, and we actually get a structure fire with someone trapped, it’s not good. Yes, they’re taking chances not only with the economy but with people’s lives.”
The Department of Natural Resources regulates where and when people can conduct controlled burns.
Contact your local office for details.
The department’s Burn Safe Map will be posted on their web site beginning March 15.
