Students at Maple Grove Education Centre in Hebron have been enjoying visits from local authors.
It’s through a program from the Writers Federation of Nova Scotia called ‘WITS,’ short for ‘writers in the schools.’
The program helps alleviate the cost of bringing authors into schools to help promote literature and literacy for students of all ages.
Yesterday, Martine Jacquot of the Annapolis Valley spoke to Grade 7 and 8 Core French Immersion classes.
Jacquot, originally from France has written 30 books, along with countless short stories and poems, mostly in French.
Her stories have featured many female main characters, and include mentions of Pubnico and other french speaking communities.
Jacquot says she enjoys sharing her personal story with students,
“Where I come from, there were no books in my house, we were very poor. For some reason, this is what I wanted to do. If I can do it, anyone can. Everyone has certain gifts, and if you want to write, do it.”
Jacquot says she always hopes to connect with the students.
“When I see a little star in their eyes, I know that I’ve reached them and they will get something out of this.”
Her visit is the second of three by authors to Maple Grove this month.
Pam Hickman will be there next Monday, and Julian Mortimer-Smith visited earlier this month.
