The MLA for Lunenburg West says he landed on his feet.
Mark Furey was named Attorney General and Justice Minister in Premier Stephen McNeil’s recent cabinet appointments.
He says lessons learned in his previous career with the RCMP will serve him well in the new role.
Furey wants to clear away barriers to justice faced by some Nova Scotians.
“Access can be limited by a number of things. But certainly, an understanding of the process and one’s financial inability to be properly engaged and represented in the justice process.”
He says interacting with people from all walks off life has shown him how important it is to be inclusive.
“There is a need to address the diverse make up of our province. That has to be represented in our institutions. And we’re heading in the right direction.”
Furey says the recent appointments of a diverse group of judges is a good start.
But more needs to be done to ensure equal justice for all Nova Scotians.
