Southwest Employment Services will receive federal funding to help people with disabilities gain employment.

West Nova MP Colin Fraser made the announcement at the organization's office in the Pier One complex in Yarmouth today.

Fraser says $201,509 will help 27 people in Yarmouth, Shelburne, Digby, Annapolis and part of Kings County who have little or no labour force attachment.

"Workplaces and communities need to be accessible to all. The way we do business needs to be accessible so all Canadians with a disability have equal access to jobs and services."

A community coordinator will deliver these services.

Co-Chair Bruce Johnson explains what the program provides.

"In addition to employment related services such as needs assessments, counselling and case management, the program also supports interventions tailored to meet individual needs including those that enhance the skills of participants, provide them with employment experience, or enable them to start their own business."

The average disability rate in Nova Scotia is 21 per cent.

Representatives from all levels of government attended today's announcement.
