Nova Scotia’s new NDP leader was in Yarmouth yesterday.
Gary Burrill was a guest speaker at the CUPE Convention at the Rodd Grand Hotel, and attended a meeting in Brooklyn.
The 60 year old is a United Church minister and former New Democratic MLA for Colchester-Musquodoboit Valley, a seat he lost in the last election.
He took the party leadership in a February vote that saw him defeat Dave Wilson and Lenore Zann. It was a record e-voting turnout at 74.2 percent.
In an interview with CJLS, Burrill says his parents are originally from Yarmouth, where he grew up visiting his grandparents.
He says winning the party leadership is a wonderful opportunity.
On the Yarmouth-U.S. ferry, a service the NDP government scrapped in 2009, Burrill says his party supports the service.
He says however the current deal with Bay Ferries has many things that are of great concern.
Leading the party from outside the legislature, Burrill says the NDP will introduce a number of bills in the spring sitting, including a bill to increase minimum wage from $10.70 to $15.
