Attendance Up In TCRSB Schools

The Superintendent of the Tri-County Regional School Board says attendance is up this school year.

Paul Ash says the attendance rates have shown steady improvement since the inception of the new Attendance and Engagement Policy by the province.

He says it has shone a light around the importance of attendance.

"They've responded appropriately and we're pleased to say that we've seen an increase in the attendance rates of our students. We think as a system, we now are better able to respond to the needs of our students, having them in our classrooms on a more frequent basis."

The policy specifies a decision on loss of credit that must be made prior to three weeks before the end of the semester.

Ash says the number of students who lost their credit due to attendance is low as we near the end of the first semester.

He says the board has also adopted an extended absence process for students working during the fishing season.

Ash says roughly 140 students have taken advantage of the process, and all have returned to school safely.
