The regional Jeux de l’Acadie has been canceled.
Clare was set to host the event over the Victoria Day long weekend.
In a release, the provincial Acadian games committee says uncertainly over work-to-rule by the Nova Scotia Teachers Union and a lack of volunteers are contributing factors.
They say Clare has committed to host the event next year.
Normally, athletes use regionals to qualify for the Finale des Jeux de l’Acadie.
The committee is planning a new format with spread out provincial tournaments.
Chef de Mission for Par-en-Bas’ roughly 100 athletes Chris Frotten says his group is in organizing mode right now.
“We’ve started to organize ourselves to try and find dates for tryouts. We’re pretty well moving as usual. Things might be a little different depending on how many teams are willing to participate and where the tournaments will be, but from an organizational point of view for the Par-en-Bas region, we’re moving as normal.”
Frotten says the set-up is just a little different than what they’re used to.
“It’s unfortunate that the students and athletes won’t get a chance to all get together on one weekend, which is something we always enjoy. They like to see old friends and meet new ones. But at the same time, it looks like the athletes will still get a chance to qualify for the Finale des Jeux de l’Acadie.”
The committee says provincial tournaments would be held in mid-May.
