A tightly contested game at Mariners Centre saw the Truro Bearcats come through in the clutch again.

Nic Blanchard scored the game winning goal at 12:40 of the third period, and the hometown Yarmouth Junior A Mariners fell 2-1 in Game 2 of their first round MHL playoff series tonight in front of 1,311 fans.

The Bearcats lead the series 2-0 heading back to Truro for Game 3 Monday night.

The first period in this one saw lots of penalties and aggression, but no goals.

Truro opened the scoring in the second period on a goal by Noah Archibald.

Yarmouth's Matt Barron would tie it early in the third on a delayed penalty, bringing the 'Fishtank' to life in the playoffs for the first time in two seasons.

Once Blanchard restored Truro's lead, the Bearcats were able to play strong defensively for the victory, the eighth time they've beaten Yarmouth this season.

It was a script similar to Game 1, where the Bearcats found the go ahead goal late in the third.

Mariners Head Coach and General Manager Laurie Barron says the game could have gone either way.

"A couple of their mistakes didn't find the back of the net, and a couple of ours did. That's playoff hockey. We need to find a way to get that first win and get a little momentum. We're not far off, we have to find a way to win four games and that starts with winning one on Monday."

Leif Hertz stopped 19 shots, and was strong in the Mariner net once again, while Jason Rioux got the win with 25 saves.

In other action, the Amherst Ramblers tied their first round series with the Pictou County Weeks Crushers, winning Game 2 4-1 at Amherst Stadium.

In Miramichi, the Timberwolves pounced on the St. Stephen Aces 10-1 to take a 1-0 series lead.
