Yarmouth firefighters are being commended for saving nearby structures after a large unoccupied building burst into flames Thursday night.
The former multi-unit apartment building at the intersection of Argyle-William and Forbes streets was fully engulfed when firefighters arrived.
A large crowd hampered their efforts at first with some people parking right in front of the building.
One driver actually hooked his vehicle onto a main water line while moving away from the scene.
Platoon Chief Stephen Jeffery said at the scene that one house was very close to the blazing inferno.
"We have one (building) that's about a foot apart. So hopefully we can bring this to a successful conclusion."
That building was saved although there was some damage to the north end.
The burned building was leveled with an excavator.
Jeffery said the RCMP had been to the house earlier in the day to deal with "squatters".
The cause has not been determined.
Jeffery said fighters did a "remarkable" job.
