Free legal advice is on the way for sexual assault survivors in Nova Scotia.

South Shore St. Margaret's MP Bernadette Jordan announced $810,000 in federal funding while Lunenburg West MLA Mark Furey committed support services from the province.

Jordan says the federal government is keeping their promises.

"Our government is unwavering in our commitment to ensure that victims of sexual assault are treated with respect and dignity that they deserve."

Furey became emotional while making the announcement.

"For me, this is a significant accomplishment. Because what we're doing now, I couldn't do, quite honestly, over a thirty-two year policing career."

Survivors will have access to free legal advice and benefit from a guide created by Prosecutors to help them through the court process.

Crown Attorneys will also receive training on how to better support survivors engaged in the legal system.
