A new hockey season brings with it a new social media policy for members of Hockey Nova Scotia.
Executive Director Darren Cossar says they wanted a policy in place to deal with issues like cyberbullying, divulging player information or making critical statements about officials.
He says Hockey Canada was involved with its development.
“So that everybody would be clear on the expectations when it came to using social media. It’s a great tool and we want to encourage our members to use it but at the same time we have to use it responsibly.”
Cossar says penalties for infractions could range from a suspension to removal for a significant period or fines.
He says apps like Facebook and Twitter are a part of life for most hockey organizations and they just want to ensure everyone enjoys the game in a safe environment.
Cossar says the policy is a living document and will be adaptable to the ways people use social networks.
