The Warden of the Municipality of Barrington says the council did not make a decision to implement a new tax lightly.
It passed a Deed Transfer Tax this week.
Eddie Nickerson says council held a public hearing, spoke with many residents and held a lot of discussion before making its decision on the 1.5 per cent levy.
"It's a hard thing to put a tax on something. No council wants to do that but had a study done that identified a lot of aging municipal infrastructure."
Warden Nickerson says council needed to generate more revenue in order to complete future projects.
He says an engineering report suggests that the Recreation Building should be replaced, and significant improvements made to all other municipal buildings.
Council has also been discussing the addition of user facilities at some of our beaches, and the further development of commercial property now that all current lots have been sold in the business park.
