It was 50 years ago today that residents of a Shelburne County community saw an unidentified flying object disappear into the ocean.
The Shag Harbour UFO Incident Society marked the anniversary with a festival over the weekend.
Society President Brock Zinck says the event was a huge success.
“It went beyond our expectations. It was full capacity and we certainly filled up the venues, so that was impressive. People really support what we’re doing, and they are interested in this incident. They came out to support this festival, which helps support our local area.”
Zinck says one of the highlights was the witness panel, sharing stories of what they saw late that evening in 1967.
RCMP, the Canadian Coast Guard and more investigated, but the mystery of what the object was has never been solved.
Today, events to mark the official anniversary are planned.
There will be satellite art display for extra-terrestrials at 39 Atwood Road in the Hawk on Cape Sable Island.
This evening at 6, there will be presentations at the Shag Harbour Incident Centre, along with cake and refreshments.
As for next year, Zinck says planning is already underway.
