A Yarmouth County woman has raised nearly $12,000 so far to help kids with cancer and their families.
Jill Smith of Argyle Head will cycle coast-to-coast next month to raise funds for kids with cancer and their families.
The Coast To Coast Against Cancer Foundation is Canada’s leading national charity devoted to fighting childhood cancer, distributing nearly $4.1 million to more than fifty childhood cancer organizations all across the country last year.
Smith says people are getting used to seeing her at various locations.
“So I need another $3,000 to make it to $15,000. That’s a lot of fundraising. I’m grateful.”
Friday afternoon she’ll be in front of the NSLC on Starrs Road. Saturday morning she will be at the Yarmouth Farmers Market.
Smith says families who have a child with cancer face many challenges.
“You may have to hire people to take care help take care. One of the patents may have to stop working. It’s very expensive.”
Smith says one woman showed her a picture of her son who was in hospital receiving cancer treatment at the age of 7 then showed her another photo of his high school graduation.
She says that’s why she and others are riding across country for the cause.
The ride leaves Vancouver and ends in Halifax from September 6th to 23rd, a 7,000 kilometre journey.
