Mayor Pam Mood says taxi operators in the town of Yarmouth are encouraged to be represented on a taxi advisory committee.
Council gave first reading to an amendment to the Taxi-Bylaw which would see the Committee of the Whole serve as that body.
Mayor Mood says the town has put out several public requests for cab companies to have representatives sit on the committee.
“We have done two or three call outs with notices in the media to have people step on to that committee and we’ve had no takers. So the Committee of the Whole, which is council, will take that on. There’s certainly some issues like an increase in their rate. If one taxi company came forward they certainly would all want to be at the table. I understand there is certainly the time factor, their hours. and all those pieces. We’ll work the best we can, as that advisory committee, to address their concerns.”
Mood says she supports the taxi operators request for an increase in fares but she says the request, so far, has not been official and has been made public only through news stories on this radio station.
