This was the first day of the return to Work To Rule for Nova Scotia teachers.

The Nova Scotia Teachers Union made the announcement about work-to-rule Friday afternoon.

McNeil told reporters they are not days off, but are meant for marking and preparation time.

A new memorial service for fishermen lost at sea will take place this summer in Shelburne.

Mayor Karen Mattatall received council's support last week to create a service at the Fishermen's Memorial on Dock Street.

The first one will take place on June 11.

Mayor Mattatall says she's been wanting to do this project for a while.

"Fishing communities certainly have had the sad tragedies of people who have lost their life to the sea. I thought, we have this beautiful memorial on our waterfront and we don't do a service. I thought it was time to do that."

She says while protective services amounts to over 30 per cent of the town's annual budget, she believes taxpayers
are getting their money's worth.

"You have to understand what you get for the money. For us, the RCMP, and what we're getting for what we're putting out, we're more than happy with the service."

Spokesman Lynn Seeley says the vacant house was destroyed.

Lake Vaughn, Wedgeport and Port Maitland fire departments also attended the scene.

The Yarmouth Fire Department had to return later when it rekindled.

Seeley says later in the day they were called to a garage-apartment fire in John's Cove.

He says the owner lost many personal possessions.

They attended a call of smoke in a basement and also responded with EHS to a medical emergency.
