Mariners Continue To Roll, Down Dieppe 5-2

The Yarmouth Junior A Mariners are still undefeated.

The Mariners took down the defending North Division champion Dieppe Commandos 5-2 tonight at Mariners Centre.

Yarmouth's season opening win streak hit seven with the victory.

Andrew Martell had two goals for the home team, picking up first star honours.

Matt Barron, Ezekiel Estrada and Duncan McKie also scored, Chris Goreham and Noah McMullin each had a pair of assists.

Leif Hertz was solid in net for the Mariners, making 25 saves for his fifth win of the season.

Shag Festival This Weekend

You don't need to travel to area 51 to hear about aliens...Shag Harbour is celebrating their very own first encounter.

The Shag Festival is an opportunity for people to hear about a UFO sighting in 1967.

Volunteer Noah Morritt says first hand witnesses will be on hand to share their experience.

He says this year they've even added a bus tour.

"You get to go on the original course that the lights took. Right from where it was first spotted to where it disappeared into the harbour."

Mayor/MLA Laud Ferry Service Despite Low Numbers

The Cat ferry wraps up its 2016 season Saturday.

For both proponents and critics of the Yarmouth to Portland service, it's all about numbers.

While Bay Ferries hasn't yet released the final tally, Mayor Pam Mood says the latest figures, released on September 13, are impressive.

Based on weekly daily averages, the Cat Ferry carried around 30,982 passengers between June 15 and Sept. 11.

Unbeaten Mariners Welcome Dieppe Commandos To Town Tonight

The Yarmouth Junior A Mariners look to remain perfect tonight.

It won't be easy, as last season's Eastlink North division champion Dieppe Commandos visit Mariners Centre.

Yarmouth is the fourth best team in the country right now, and in first place in the MHL with a 6-0 record.

The Commandos won 6-3 last night in South Shore, and are 3-2 through five games.

Mariners Head Coach and GM Laurie Barron says his team will have to be sharp against Dieppe.

Warner Comeau Named Chair Of Western Regional Enterprise Network

The Western Regional Enterprise Network named a new chair this week.

Warner Comeau, a retired insurance broker in Yarmouth joined the WREN board when it was first formed two and a half years ago.

Comeau takes over as board chair from Allister Surette after serving as vice-chair.

The appointment was made at WREN's second annual meeting in Yarmouth on Tuesday.

Comeau says the board will continue focusing on population growth in the area.

Shelburne: Warden Believes Incentive Pay Would Attract Doctors

The warden of the Municipality of Shelburne believes incentive pay is the key to attracting doctors to rural Nova Scotia.

The province announced four new nurse practitioners and family practice nurses are coming to South West Nova Scotia.

Roger Taylor says it's good news but more needs to be done.

"People are motivated by money and to pay doctors to work in under-serviced areas is a proven method. It works up North and it's what the Province of Nova Scotia should be doing."

Public Helping Yarmouth County Museum With New Windows

New windows will soon be installed at the Yarmouth County Museum and Archives on Collins Street.

The large windows are for the front of the building, and will replace the current ones that have rotted, creating leaks during storms.

A company in the Annapolis Valley is expected to begin the replacement in mid-October.

Museum Director/Curator Nadine Gates says it will cost about $35,000, and fundraising efforts continue.
